What Is a Swag Bag? What Goes in One, What People Actually Keep, and Why the Bag Matters More Than the Contents

A swag bag is a branded bag of free products handed out at a conference, trade show, sports event, festival, product launch or award ceremony. It usually holds a mix of promotional items carrying the organiser's or sponsors' logos, and the bag itself is branded too. The word swag has been used for promotional freebies since the 1960s, when it described records sent to radio stations and gifts handed to airline passengers. The popular idea that it stands for "stuff we all get" is a later invention. This guide covers what goes into a good swag bag, which items people keep and which they throw away, why the bag is often the most valuable piece, and how to plan a branded waterproof bag order so it arrives in time for the event.

Most swag ends up in a hotel bin before the attendee reaches the airport. The pen, the stress ball and the paper flyer have a short life. The bag usually survives, because it is useful long after the event. That makes the choice of bag the decision with the biggest effect on what the budget actually buys.

What Goes in a Swag Bag?

The contents depend on the audience and the event, but the items that tend to work share one quality: the recipient would have bought something like them anyway. At a tech conference that might be a charging cable, a phone stand and a water bottle. At an outdoor or marine event it is a dry bag, a phone pouch, sunscreen and a cap. At a sports event it is a towel, a drinks bottle and a wet-dry bag for kit. At a launch or award ceremony it is fewer, higher-value items, often samples of the product itself.

What does not work is the opposite: novelty items with a logo printed on them and no real use, cheap goods that break on the first day, and stacks of printed material that could have been a QR code. A smaller bag with three useful things almost always does more for a brand than a heavy one with ten things nobody wanted.

Why Is the Bag the Most Important Item?

Bags are carried in public, used again and again, and seen by everyone around the person carrying them. The ASI 2026 Ad Impressions Study, one of the largest regular surveys of promotional products, estimates that a promotional tote bag generates close to 5,000 impressions over its lifetime, second only to outerwear, at roughly a tenth of a cent per impression. The same study found that 86 percent of consumers would think more favourably of an advertiser that gave them a sustainable bag, the highest figure of any product category.

The implication for anyone planning a swag bag is simple. If the bag is good enough to keep, every one of those impressions carries the logo. If it is a thin non-woven tote that tears on the way home, those impressions never happen. Spending a larger share of the budget on the bag and less on filler is usually the better trade.

For events near water, outdoors or in hot, wet climates, a waterproof bag is the obvious upgrade. A roll-top dry bag carries the event's contents on the day, protects a phone and wallet at the beach or on a boat trip, and then lives on as a gym, travel or kayak bag. It is also a product people do not usually buy for themselves until they need one, which makes it feel more generous than its price.

Dry bag dimensions are given flat, before the top is rolled. A popular combination is a 10 litre dry bag with a phone pouch inside, both printed with the same logo, which costs far less than most electronics and gets used for years. For the full range of logo-ready options, see our custom dry bags category and the custom logo roll-top dry bag programme.

How Should a Logo Go on a Swag Bag?

Screen printing in one to three spot colours is the most economical method for a simple logo and gives a crisp, durable result on PVC and TPU. Full-colour digital or UV printing suits detailed artwork and photographs. Heat transfer works well for small runs and multi-colour logos, and a welded TPU badge gives a raised, premium finish for VIP pieces. Reflective printing is a useful touch for running, cycling and night events.

Keep the design bold and legible from a few metres away, because that is how most people will see it. A single logo with the event name and year usually works better than a crowded panel of every sponsor. If several sponsors must appear, a separate printed phone pouch or inner bag for each is often cleaner than putting all of them on the main bag. Our article on promotional dry bags covers printing methods and unit cost in more detail.

How Far Ahead Should You Order Swag Bags?

Later than the brief, and earlier than most people expect. A printed sample of a standard dry bag takes 7 to 15 days. Once the sample is approved, bulk production of our SL-D002 runs about 20 days for up to 500 pieces, 25 days for up to 2,500 and 30 days for up to 5,000, and 30 to 45 days on other models. Sea freight to North America or Europe then adds three to five weeks, plus customs clearance and delivery to the venue. For a sea shipment, ten to twelve weeks before the event is a comfortable starting point. Air freight can cut the transit to under a week for urgent orders, at a higher cost per piece.

Two things shorten the process. Choosing stock colours rather than custom Pantone colours avoids a material lead time, and sending the final vector logo with the first enquiry saves a round of artwork questions. For US events, ask for both China and Vietnam origin quotes, because the duty position differs. Since 24 July 2026, a 12.5 percent Section 301 duty applies to both China and Vietnam origin, and China-origin goods carry additional China-specific Section 301 duties on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the point of a swag bag?

To give attendees something useful that keeps the brand in front of them after the event. The bag itself carries the logo every time it is used, which is why a durable bag is worth more than a pile of filler items.

What should I put in a swag bag on a small budget?

Spend most of the budget on a good bag and add one or two useful items, such as a phone pouch and a water bottle. Fewer, better items are kept longer than many cheap ones.

What is the minimum order for custom swag bags?

For our waterproof bags and pouches, 300 pieces per design. The 300 can usually be split across sizes and stock colours within one design.

Can each sponsor have its own logo?

Yes. Each logo is treated as a separate design for MOQ purposes, so many events put the main logo on the bag and sponsor logos on inner pouches or phone pouches.

Are PVC swag bags safe and compliant?

They can be made in phthalate-free PVC or TPU to meet REACH in the EU and Proposition 65 in California. Tell us the destination market when you enquire and we will specify the material accordingly.

What is the difference between a swag bag and a gift bag?

The terms overlap. A swag bag is usually branded and handed to everyone at an event, while a gift bag is often a one-off present. At high-profile events the two meet in the luxury "gifting suite" bags given to guests and presenters.
