Sealock is a waterproof messenger bag manufacturer producing welded and sewn crossbody bags for urban, cycling and lifestyle brands, with OEM production from 300 pieces, high-frequency welded TPU construction, and factories in Dongguan, China and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This guide explains how a messenger bag is made genuinely waterproof, the carry details that cyclists and commuters judge it on, and what MOQ, price and testing to expect when developing your own range.
The messenger bag came out of bicycle courier work, where a bag has to swing to the front for a delivery and back again without being taken off, in every kind of weather. Today it is a staple of commuter and lifestyle ranges, and it is judged by the same standards. Reviews of cycling messenger bags keep returning to a short list of complaints. Thin shells without a liner that soak through in sustained rain, coatings that wet out, straps that slip or adjusters that slide off the end, buckles that rattle over rough roads, bags that shift forward on every pothole, and a lack of built-in visibility. Each of these is fixed in the pattern and the parts list, not in the marketing.
A messenger bag has a large opening under a flap, and that opening is where water gets in. There are three ways to deal with it.
The first is a welded TPU body under a buckled flap. The bag is formed from TPU laminated fabric joined with high-frequency welded seams, so the body itself has no needle holes, and a generous flap with a side-release buckle covers the opening. Our SL-H017C is built this way in 600D TPU laminate. It is rated for rain and road spray, which suits daily commuting, and it keeps its shape and wipes clean.
The second adds a roll-top under the flap. The inner opening is folded down at least three times before the flap closes over it, and this combination is the standard for courier bags meant to survive all-day rain. It is the most reliable way to waterproof a large messenger opening, and we build it to order on the same welded platform.
The third combines a welded shell with a removable sewn insert, and it is how our SL-H017C is built. The welded TPU body does the waterproofing, while a padded insert made on our sewing line does the protecting and organising. The insert is a padded nylon cube with a soft brushed lining and a movable padded divider held by hook-and-loop, so it can be set up for a camera body and lens, a tablet, a small drone or everyday electronics. It lifts out in one piece, so the bag can be emptied, wiped and dried after a wet ride, and the insert can be used on its own or moved to another bag. This is where Sealock's two production lines meet. High-frequency welding and industrial sewing run in separate rooms on the same production floor, so the welded shell and the sewn insert are built, fitted and checked together under one roof. Brands that prefer a fabric look can also specify a sewn outer shell with a welded waterproof liner inside, which we build on the same basis.

The shoulder strap is the whole carry system, so it has to be right. A quick-adjust buckle lets a rider tighten the bag before setting off and loosen it to swing the bag to the front, but it needs to be easy to operate on the move. Strap ends need stoppers, because one recurring complaint is adjusters that slide off the end of a loosened strap. A shaped, padded shoulder pad that stays in position spreads the load, and the strap anchors should be welded tabs on a welded bag so the shell is not pierced.
Stability is next. A messenger bag that slides forward or swings while riding is tiring and distracting. A cross-body stabiliser strap, clipped under the opposite arm, keeps the bag on the back over rough roads and is recommended for heavier loads. It should be removable for walking and easy to stow when not in use. Hardware matters too. Buckles that rattle over cobbles are a small irritation that shows up in reviews, and a tight-fitting buckle or a simple hook-and-loop keeper solves it.
Visibility and organisation complete the list. Reflective trim or reflective print on the flap faces traffic when the bag is worn, and a light loop lets riders clip on a rear light. Inside, a laptop or tablet sleeve, a zipped pocket for keys and cards and a pen and phone panel stop small items rattling around a single open compartment, which is a common gap in minimalist designs. An external bottle pocket and a top carry handle for off-bike use are both features reviewers notice when they are missing.
The standard MOQ is 300 pieces per design, including your logo. Standard colours can usually be split within the MOQ. Custom Pantone TPU, dyed-to-match webbing and custom buckles need their own material run. Messenger bags are usually developed in more than one size, for example a compact 8 to 10 litre everyday bag like the SL-H017C and a larger bag for 13 to 15.6 inch laptops, and sizes in the same family can share an order. A new size or a roll-top variant needs a new welding die, which is quoted separately. For broader guidance on order structure, see our article on MOQ requirements for waterproof bag manufacturing.
The closure is the first driver. A buckled flap over a welded body is the most economical waterproof design, a roll-top under the flap adds material and a weld step, and a sewn outer with a separate welded liner costs the most because it is effectively two bags assembled into one. Fabric weight comes next, with 600D TPU laminate a common balance of durability and weight. The strap system adds cost through the quick-adjust buckle, stabiliser strap and padded shoulder piece, and branded hardware costs more than generic fittings. Reflective details, internal organisers and retail packaging complete the picture. We send a firm FOB quote within 24 hours once we have your reference model or design, size, quantity, colours and logo.
The flap is one of the best branding surfaces in the bag catalogue, large, flat and seen by everyone behind the wearer. A high-frequency welded TPU logo patch is permanent and adds no needle holes. Screen printing and high-build silicone printing suit bold graphic logos, and a reflective print turns the logo into a safety feature at night. On sewn designs, woven labels, embroidery and rubber patches can be stitched onto the outer shell above a waterproof liner. Branded buckles, a custom strap webbing and coloured binding finish a recognisable range.
Messenger bags rated for rain and spray are tested against heavy rain and water jets with the flap closed as the user would close it. Roll-top designs built for immersion protection go through a full water-immersion test of two hours or more. Weld peel tests run at the start of each production run. Because the strap carries the whole load, strap anchors and buckles are pull-tested, the bag goes through more than 1,500 load cycles, and quick-adjust buckles and zippers are cycled for wear, with zippers taken to 3,000 cycles on our fatigue tester. Fabric is checked for abrasion, colour fastness and colour difference against the approved sample. Incoming materials, in-line production and finished goods are inspected in turn, with SGS or QIMA inspection available on request. When buyers inspect shipments themselves, we follow the full leak procedure: unboxing, vacuum extraction, a 24-hour static rest, and then the air-leak determination.
Goods of both Chinese and Vietnamese origin have carried the 12.5 percent Section 301 baseline in the United States since 24 July 2026, and Chinese origin additionally carries the existing China-specific Section 301 duties. Every Sealock design can be produced at either factory, so United States buyers can compare both origins at the same specification.
The models below are organised by type rather than priority. Each can be produced with your branding, or used as the starting point for a new messenger design.

Samples take 7 to 15 days on existing models with your logo, and longer for new sizes that need a welding die. Bulk production typically takes 30 to 45 days after sample approval. Prices are quoted FOB Guangdong for China origin, with Vietnam origin quoted on request. Sealock has over 20 years of manufacturing experience in welded and sewn bags, and ground-up development from a sketch or a sample is fully supported, with the longer timeline stated at quotation. Messenger bags can ship in the same order as commuter backpacks and bike bags. See our guides to waterproof laptop backpack manufacturing and waterproof bike bag manufacturing for cycling brands.
A welded body with a well-designed flap handles rain and road spray. For all-day downpours, choose a roll-top under the flap. A sewn messenger needs a waterproof liner to be more than water resistant.
Without a stabiliser strap, a single-strap bag will shift on rough roads and in corners. A removable cross-body stabiliser keeps it on your back.
Low-grip adjusters and straps without end stoppers can slip under load. A quality quick-adjust buckle and stitched or welded strap ends prevent it.
Yes. The SL-H017C insert lifts out in one piece, and its padded divider moves on hook-and-loop to fit a camera, a tablet or small electronics. Insert sizes and divider layouts can be customised.
The compact SL-H017C suits tablets and daily essentials. Larger messenger bags with padded sleeves for 13 to 15.6 inch laptops can be developed on the same welded platform.
